HOT TOPICS FOR LEARNING

Can the Internet build bridges?

Presenter: Noa Elefant

SETTING THE CONTEXT (10-15 minutes)

Google Israel initiated "Hang Out Bridges" - a project using Google Hang Outs (a platform for managed video conference) for cross - cultural discourse and shared activities. We'll discuss the advantages and challenges in using the platform for interaction between distant communities. We'll present the Israeli variation of "Hanging Out for Peace" (aimed at Arab and Jewish Israeli students) and discuss whether it can also be applicable in Rhode Island, with different communities.

DISCUSS AND SHARE (15 minutes)
We believe in the power of technology to create bridges. The Internet offers the ability to connect while students have the confidence of staying in there own communities. It sets the ground for face to face meeting, breaking the ice and few stereotypes along the way. Creating together gives the context and shared interest. At the Hot Topics session we would like to explore if the project, developed in Israel and based on Google Hang Out platform, can work in Rhode Island too. We'll search for the optimal balance between virtual and face to face meetings, and the discuss types of activities and shared missions which can be offered to different communities and age groups.
